Today was the first day of classes for our essay writing class. Even though it will be the fifth time I have taught essay writing at Chosun University, I still look forward to teaching the course. I always enjoy meeting people who like writing, and I also enjoy seeing what writing they can produce.
I really like reading good writing, because it is like sharing good ideas between you and one other person. They have time to think of their own ideas, and then develop those ideas, and then ‘package’ them or create a ‘gift-wrap’ within an essay, to present their ideas beautifully and carefully. So, to me, starting to read someone else’s essay is like opening a present: I never know what good things I’m going to find inside.
Walking into class on the first day is like this too. It’s the same feeling. Who will I find in class today? Will I know anyone? Will they work together well? What will they be like in class?
We started today’s class by introducing ourselves, and then brainstorming one ‘significant’ time in our lives. Then we thought about three different aspects or ‘ideas’ from that one time, and we wrote one sentence for each of those three different ideas. Those three sentences are going to be the ‘topic sentences’ for the body paragraphs of our very first essays!
